High / low are average daily temperatures (°C). “Feels” reflects how hot or cold it feels, allowing for humidity.
Muscat & the Batinah Coast (Muscat, Sohar, Barka)
Humidity rises noticeably in May and coastal thermometers frequently push into the mid-to-high 30s°C; the air feels heavy in the afternoon. Swimming and hotel pools become the default escape, while city attractions are busiest early and late in the day. If you must sightsee midday, plan air-conditioned stops and avoid inland valley excursions.
Musandam Peninsula (Khasab, Dibba, fjords & dhow cruises)
May brings warming that can push the coast into the low 30s°C by mid-month, though the peninsula’s winds hold humidity down compared with Muscat. Pelagic life is active for boat trips and diving operators begin longer routes. Book early-morning cruises to avoid heat; carry sunscreen and hydrate - afternoons are best spent in shade.
Hajar Mountains & highlands (Jebel Akhdar, Jebel Shams, Nizwa)
May brings warm, crisp days and cooler nights at altitude; the highlands are often the country’s most pleasant place to escape lowland heat. Trekking windows widen but afternoons grow hot in the lower Hajar slopes, so start hikes early. Pack breathable hiking layers and a warm layer for camp nights, as temperatures can drop sharply after sunset.
Interior Desert & Wahiba Sands (Sharqiyah Sands, desert wadis, Ras al Hadd approaches)
May shifts the sands toward true summer heat with daytime highs frequently into the mid-to-high 30s°C; exertion during the day becomes uncomfortable. Camping remains possible but organize morning and evening activities, not midday. Make sure your desert operator stocks plenty of water, shade canopies and cooling options, and be ready for very warm nights in low-lying desert camps.
Dhofar & Salalah Region (Salalah, Mirbat, khareef monsoon coast)
May is the last dry month before the khareef and temperatures can reach low 30s°C inland; humidity rises as the season approaches. Operators begin to prepare for the monsoon of the south; some excursions shift to morning and late-afternoon. Pack for heat but also a light waterproof as the first coastal mists sometimes begin in late May.
