Murano City

Island city famous for glassmaking

Glassmaking still defines Murano: furnace-lit workshops, glassblowers shaping chandeliers, the Museo del Vetro, and canals lined with tiny shops. Visitors come for demonstrations, delicate millefiori pieces, and a quieter Venetian pace a short vaporetto ride from St. Mark’s.

Why Visit Murano?#

On a lagoon islet just off Venice, this island is synonymous with centuries of glassmaking: skilled glassblowers, family-run ateliers and the Museo del Vetro showcase blown art and techniques. Shoppers come for original Murano glass jewelry and chandeliers, and museum demonstrations turn craft into performance. Quiet canals and the Basilica dei Santi Maria e Donato add historic weight, while local bacari serve Venetian cicchetti and seafood to round out an artisanal, island experience.

How to Get to Murano#

Murano is an island in the Venetian lagoon best reached via water transport from Venice - either Alilaguna shuttles from Marco Polo airport or ACTV vaporetti from Venezia Santa Lucia/Piazzale Roma. Expect to spend 20-60 minutes on water transport depending on origin and service.

By Air

Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE): The main international airport for reaching Murano. From the airport you can take the Alilaguna water shuttle (Line Blu/Linea Arancio) directly to Murano stops (e.g., Museo, Faro) - journey time about 40-60 minutes; Alilaguna fares are roughly €8-15 depending on the line.

Treviso Airport (TSF): A secondary option; from Treviso take a bus to Venezia Mestre or Piazzale Roma then waterbus to Murano. Overall travel time is longer and involves a transfer at Piazzale Roma or Fondamente Nove.

By Train & Bus

Train: Arrive at Venezia Santa Lucia station; from there walk to Piazzale Roma and take ACTV vaporetto lines 4.1 / 4.2 or other lines serving Murano (eg. direct lines from Fondamente Nove). Vaporetto travel from Santa Lucia to Murano takes about 20-35 minutes depending on the line; single ACTV tickets are typically €8 (75‑minute ticket).

Bus: Land buses terminate at Piazzale Roma in Venice - from there you switch to vaporetto water buses to reach Murano.

How to Get Around Murano#

Expect to use water transport to reach and get around Murano - Alilaguna from the airport or ACTV vaporetti from central Venice are the standard choices. Once on Murano, everything is close by and explored on foot.

  • Alilaguna airport water shuttle (€8-15) - Direct water shuttle service from Venice Marco Polo Airport to Murano stops. Convenient for luggage and avoids a central transfer in Venice; services are slower than land+vaporetto combinations but direct. Buy tickets at the airport or online.
  • ACTV vaporetto (public waterbus) (€8 (single) / €20-30 (day passes)) - Main public option from Venezia Santa Lucia / Piazzale Roma or Fondamente Nove to Murano (lines 4.1/4.2 and others). Frequent in daytime; single tickets currently are valid for 75 minutes, and day passes are available if you plan multiple rides.
  • Vaporetto + train (arrival by rail) (€8-15 (vaporetto part)) - If arriving by train at Venezia Santa Lucia, walk to Piazzale Roma and board a vaporetto to Murano. Trains are the fastest land option into Venice; expect a quick transfer to water transport for the final leg.
  • Water taxi / private boat (€50-150+) - Fast and direct but expensive - ideal for groups or time‑sensitive transfers. Pre‑booking recommended; prices depend on distance and number of passengers.
  • Walking (on Murano) - Murano is compact with pedestrian streets between glass workshops, museums and canals-best explored on foot once you arrive.
