The Gallerie dell’Accademia is Venice’s main public gallery for Venetian art from the late medieval period through the 18th century, housed on the south bank of the Grand Canal in Dorsoduro.

The collection developed from the Accademia di Belle Arti and other civic holdings; it was consolidated into a public gallery in the 19th century and has remained the central repository for pre-19th-century Venetian paintings.

The Gallerie sits beside the Grand Canal at the Accademia area of Dorsoduro, immediately adjacent to the Accademia Bridge and within the historic core of Venice.

Gallerie dell’Accademia sits on the south bank of the Grand Canal in Venice (Dorsoduro) near the Accademia bridge. From Venezia Santa Lucia train station it’s about a 15-20 minute walk across the canal and through the historic centre.

By vaporetto (waterbus) you can take lines that serve the Accademia stop (for example the Grand Canal lines 1 and 2) and then walk 1-2 minutes to the gallery from the Accademia stop.

• Buy a timed ticket in advance and aim for the first entry or the last hour before closing to avoid the mid-day cruise-ship and tour-group crowds around the Accademia area.
• Approach the gallery from the Accademia Bridge side to get a quieter arrival and to enjoy the classic view of the Grand Canal before you enter; the bridge area is also a good spot for a pre- or post-visit photo.
• Allow time for the gallery's Italian Renaissance painting rooms-many visitors rush to the main masterpieces and miss the smaller works and drawings that illustrate Venetian artistic development.
