Altinum Archaeological Site

Altinum is the site of an ancient Roman and pre-Roman settlement near modern Quarto d’Altino in the Veneto region of Italy, associated with the Venetian lagoon’s early urban network. It was an important regional centre in antiquity and retains archaeological remains.

Remains visible at the site and in local collections include traces of the urban grid, canalized channels, and structural foundations from Roman-period buildings and late antique phases. Visitors interested in archaeology can view surface remains and museum-held finds that illustrate urban life in antiquity.

Originally inhabited by the Veneti and later Romanised, the settlement functioned as a trading and port community in the Roman period. The site declined during the early Middle Ages as settlement patterns shifted into the lagoon and nearby islands.

The archaeological area lies inland from the northern Venetian lagoon near Quarto d’Altino, northeast of the city of Venice and within the greater Venetian plain.

From Venice, take the regional train to Quarto d’Altino (about 20-30 minutes). The archaeological park lies a short taxi or bicycle ride from the station; local signs mark the way from the town center.

• Walk the circular pathway across the marshy excavations with waterproof shoes-some stretches are muddy after rain.
