La Fenice is Venice’s principal opera house, located in the Cannaregio district, and one of Italy’s most important theatres, originally opened in 1792.

Built in 1792, the theatre quickly became a venue for premieres by major Italian composers. It has suffered several catastrophic fires over its history, most recently in 1996, and was rebuilt and reopened in 2003, preserving historic decorative schemes while updating technical and safety systems.

Sited on the Grand Canal side of central Venice, it is within walking distance of the Santa Lucia train station and close to several vaporetto stops in the Cannaregio area.

• Foyer and museum: The foyer and small museum display historical costumes, set sketches and documents related to the theatre’s premieres and repeated restorations.

La Fenice is in Venice’s San Marco district, a short walk from the Rialto and St. Mark’s Square. From Santa Lucia train station take the vaporetto (Waterbus) line 1 or 2 to San Marco Vallaresso or San Zaccaria and walk 5-10 minutes; otherwise it is a 15-20 minute walk from the station across the Rialto Bridge.
