Mount Amnye Machen Travel Guide

Mt Amnye Machen is one of the highest peaks in the Amnye Machen mountain range in the province of Qinghai. It is a very sacred mountain and a place of pilgrimage.

Located on the Tibetan border, it is not only a pilgrimage site for Chinese people, but many Tibetans also travel for weeks on end to reach the peak. They believe that it is the home of the deity Machen Pomra. As well as pilgrims on their religious journey, the mountain is also popular with trekkers and climbers. The untamed beauty and nature trails add to the mountain’s popularity.

It is a great way to see the surrounding area and also to get away from the bustle of the city. To complete the whole trail, it takes about nine days on foot. However, it is also possible to go on horseback. This takes about five days and is much more fun. You do not have to complete the circuit; if you are short on time, you can take your pick as to which sections to climb. There are a number of monasteries to visit along the way and panoramic views to enjoy. Guides can be hired for a very low cost.

Getting There & Away

The only way to reach the mountain is by road. Buses leave Xining for Tawo every day. The journey takes approximately 9 hours and from Tawo it is a short drive to Chuwarna. Xining is home to the closest airport and has services to and from Beijing (2 hours) on a daily basis.
