Ningxia Travel Guide

Situated in North China, the pretty province of Ningxia is distinctly different from the surrounding deserts and mountains, making it an interesting area to explore. The Yellow River runs along the northern border of the province, and a good way to take a look around is by going on a boat trip.

There are a large number of appealing cities and other sights to see along the way through the province such as the capital city of Yinchuan, Guyuan, Shizuishan and Qingtongxia with its 108 Dagobas. The Great Wall of China passes through this region of China and this is naturally one of the main tourist attractions here.

There are also plenty of ancient temples to explore here, crumbling cities and lush parks. The Ningxia region has a rich and remarkable history and those with even a passing interest will find plenty to spark the imagination here. The Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region was established around fifty years ago and is bordered by Inner Mongolia to the north and west, Shaanxi to the east, while Gansu lies to the south.

This region of China is mainly comprised of dramatic mountains and plains. The main occupants are Chinese Moslems, known as the Huis. This is a good place for food lovers as they can sample a range of Huis cuisine, which is blended with traditional Chinese and Mongolian flavors. Simply wander around the main market place in any of the area’s large towns or cities to get your taste buds tingling.

Traveling around Ningxia is relatively easy as all the major towns and cities are connected by rail and most journeys take just 2 or 3 hours. It is even possible to cross the entire region in less than a day by train, and those with limited time can simply pass through and gaze as the scenery as it slips past. However, there are plenty of places to stay in Ningxia, especially in the major cities, where accommodation comes in all shapes and sizes.

Access is from Yinchuan, which is the capital of Ningxia Province.
