Ulaanbaatar and the Central Highlands
May brings clear, rapidly warming days that make Terelj Park and the rolling steppe pleasant for horseback trips and ger stays; daytime highs commonly reach 10-20°C. The air feels fresh after spring dust; wildflowers begin to dot the highlands, and many guest camps reopen for the season. Nights are still chilly, so sleep systems should include warm layers; this is the shoulder season for lower crowds before Naadam.
The Gobi Desert and Southern Sands (Dalanzadgad, Khongoryn Els, Bayanzag)
May is pleasantly warm and dry-daytime temperatures commonly reach 20-30°C-so this is an excellent month for walking the dunes, visiting the Flaming Cliffs and seeing desert blooms in sheltered hollows. Nights can drop sharply, so campers should carry warm layers and a thermos for night watches at the dunes. Toward the end of the month occasional thunder squalls can make remote tracks muddy; plan flexible schedules.
Western Mongolia and the Altai Mountains (Bayan-Ölgii, Khovd, Altai Tavan Bogd)
May is a lively shoulder season: alpine meadows begin to green and lower-altitude trails around Tsengel and the Aktash valley become walkable, with daytime temperatures often between 10-20°C. Kazakh nomads move flocks to summer pastures and eagle-hunter families prepare for the coming festivals, giving visitors a chance to see the cultural transition. Pack a warm mid-layer for evenings and expect some residual snow if you plan higher treks.
Lake Khövsgöl and Northern Taiga (Khatgal, Murun, Khovsgol National Park)
May brings a clear sense of awakening-boreal forests flush with green and migratory birds return with bold song; daytime temperatures commonly sit between 10-15°C. Lakeside meadows and trails around Khatgal become beautiful for canoeing and horse treks, though mosquitoes may start to appear late in the month. This shoulder season is great for avoiding crowds but pack insect repellent and light rainwear for occasional showers.
Eastern Steppe and Dornod Grasslands (Choibalsan, Onon River, Mongol Daguur)
May sees the steppe vividly greening and wildflowers dotting the expanses-temperatures climb into the comfortable teens and rolling horseback rides are very pleasant. Bird migration is in full swing, making this an excellent month for ornithologists visiting Mongol Daguur and the Onon wetlands. Expect fewer facilities than the popular north; camping standards vary and insect repellent may begin to be useful by month’s end.
