Ulaanbaatar and the Central Highlands
High summer arrives in June with long daylight and comfortable temperatures (often 18-25°C) across the central uplands-perfect for trekking, horse festivals and visiting the Orkhon Valley. Thunderstorms can develop in the afternoons; while they are usually brief, heavy rain can turn dirt tracks into sticky tracks and delay overland travel. This is an excellent month for mountain biking and exploring outdoor ruins before the Naadam rush.
The Gobi Desert and Southern Sands (Dalanzadgad, Khongoryn Els, Bayanzag)
High summer in June heats the Gobi rapidly, with daytime highs often in the high 20s to mid-30s Celsius and markedly cooler nights that drop by 15-20°C. The heat is dry rather than humid; early morning is the best time to climb Khongoryn Els and to visit Yolyn Am (the ice-filled gorge) before the sun softens its features. This is also the start of the short storm season-isolated but intense rains can cut across desert roads.
Western Mongolia and the Altai Mountains (Bayan-Ölgii, Khovd, Altai Tavan Bogd)
June brings mostly stable weather and long daylight, ideal for multi-day trekking in the Altai Tavan Bogd region where temperatures are cool-usually 10-20°C at lower camps but much colder near glaciers. Wildflowers and alpine rivers are at their fullest, and local guides run treks and horseback routes widely. Mosquitoes are generally fewer than in the north, but storms can roll in quickly at higher elevations; insulating layers are essential.
Lake Khövsgöl and Northern Taiga (Khatgal, Murun, Khovsgol National Park)
June is the high season for Khövsgöl: cool, pleasant days (12-20°C) and long hours mean plenty of daylight for multi-day hiking, boat trips and homestays with Tsaatan or local families. Snow lingers only on high ridges; expect more tourists and limited availability at the best camps, so reserve places early. Rivers are full from snowmelt, producing fine kayaking conditions but some swollen crossings for overland routes.
Eastern Steppe and Dornod Grasslands (Choibalsan, Onon River, Mongol Daguur)
June warms the plains further, with daytime highs commonly in the high teens to low twenties; the grasslands are ideal for long rides, homestays and photography of nomadic life. Thunderstorms occasionally cross the steppe and can flood shallow river crossings, so be ready for short delays. This is a prime month for cultural homestays, and tents or simple gers heat up quickly in midday sun-pack light breathable clothing and a warm layer for evenings.
