Ulaanbaatar and the Central Highlands

By April the thaw accelerates across the central highlands and the first green appears in sheltered valleys near Karakorum (Kharkhorin). Days can be brittle-0-10°C-with sudden late snow possible at higher elevations, so trekking routes remain muddy and access to some remote monasteries is patchy. Spring grass burns and controlled burns or wildfires on the steppe may create haze; expect potholed gravel roads leaving the capital.

The Gobi Desert and Southern Sands (Dalanzadgad, Khongoryn Els, Bayanzag)

April is one of the more comfortable shoulder months: the Gobi warms quickly to 10-20°C in the day while nights still bite, making camping on the dunes doable with decent sleeping bags. Migratory birds start returning to the small wetlands, and sunsets over Khongoryn Els are exceptional without the peak-season crowds. Road conditions improve but spring rains can sporadically wash out shallow tracks; a 4x4 with a local driver is recommended.

Western Mongolia and the Altai Mountains (Bayan-Ölgii, Khovd, Altai Tavan Bogd)

April thaws the foothills and opens access to valley homesteads, though lingering snow at higher altitudes keeps alpine routes rough. Migratory birds return to wetlands near Khovd and the lower Altai foothills show early spring flowers; it’s a quiet month for cultural visits. Prepare for a mix of conditions-warm days, icy mornings-and keep waterproof layers handy as late-season snow showers are not rare.

Lake Khövsgöl and Northern Taiga (Khatgal, Murun, Khovsgol National Park)

April thaws the forest edges and uncovers the first green shoots; daytime temperatures can reach 0-10°C though nights often remain frosty. Roads out of Murun improve but many mountain trails remain slushy and tricky; the long daylight helps with excursions around the lake’s southern bays. Early-season accommodation reopens and insects are still few, making it a quiet month for paddling or low-altitude hikes.

Eastern Steppe and Dornod Grasslands (Choibalsan, Onon River, Mongol Daguur)

April brings green shoots and a sense of renewal on the plains, though nights stay cold and strong breezes are common-daytime temps usually 5-15°C. The Onon River corridors become more accessible for light trekking and birding, and migrant flocks arrive in small numbers. This is a quieter shoulder month for eco-tourists; bring windproof layers and some sun protection for the increasingly bright days.
