Ulaanbaatar and the Central Highlands

February still feels like the long heart of winter in the central region: daytime highs sometimes remain below −10°C while clear, dry air brings dazzling blue skies. The capital is quiet and cheap flights can be had, but expect frozen puddles and icy streets-microspikes are useful for walking between ger districts and museums. Long-distance roads can be snowy; if you’re renting a vehicle, confirm winter tyres and local driving support.

The Gobi Desert and Southern Sands (Dalanzadgad, Khongoryn Els, Bayanzag)

February brings the last stretch of severe cold and a hard, desiccating wind that scours the sand dunes near Khongoryn Els; daytime highs may linger around −5 to −10°C. The Flaming Cliffs (Bayanzag) are skeletal and the famed dinosaur sites are accessible with local guides, but nights remain inhospitable for camping. Roads can still be icy; opt for overland tours that provide heated accommodation rather than independent camping.

Western Mongolia and the Altai Mountains (Bayan-Ölgii, Khovd, Altai Tavan Bogd)

February keeps the high mountains locked in snow, but clear, cold days can be excellent for photographing frozen alpine scenery around Tavan Bogd. The Golden Eagle Festival typically occurs later in the year, so winter travel focuses on cultural immersion with Kazakh hosts rather than large events. Make sure your itinerary allows for weather delays and arrange for appropriate winter clothing and crampons for short hikes.

Lake Khövsgöl and Northern Taiga (Khatgal, Murun, Khovsgol National Park)

February brings clear, intensely cold days and excellent visibility for photographing the ice patterns and snowbound pine forests; daytime temperatures remain severe but stable. The ice is still thick, and winter festivals or small local gatherings may occur in lakeside villages like Khatgal. Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and overnight tents on the ice are feasible with specialist guides; independent travel is challenging without local expertise.

Eastern Steppe and Dornod Grasslands (Choibalsan, Onon River, Mongol Daguur)

February continues the strong winter pattern with persistently low temperatures, though a few clear, bright days make for excellent low-cost travel if you can handle the cold. Local life is visible-winter markets and stove-warmed gers feel authentic-but fieldwork and wildlife viewing are limited by the weather. Prepare for long-distance drives to take longer than summer schedules.
