Sacred & Spiritual Places in the Middle East

No region on Earth holds more spiritual weight than the Middle East. It is the birthplace of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and a stronghold of ancient faiths from Zoroastrianism to the Baha’i. Pilgrims have travelled here for millennia to walk where prophets walked and to pray at shrines that anchor entire religious traditions.

Jerusalem alone holds sites central to three faiths within a single walled city. Mecca and Medina form the heart of the Islamic world, while the Iraqi and Iranian shrine cities are the spiritual centres of Shia Islam. Christian pilgrims trace the life of Jesus through Bethlehem, Nazareth, and Galilee, and Sufi seekers gather at the tomb of Rumi in Konya.

Some of these sites welcome all visitors; others, most notably Mecca and Medina, are open only to Muslims. All of them pulse with living devotion rather than mere history.
