How to Get to Safed
Safed (Tzfat) has no direct rail service and is accessed mainly by bus or car from regional rail hubs (Haifa, Karmiel) or from Ben Gurion Airport via Haifa. Egged regional buses are the principal public transport option to the city.
Haifa Airport (HFA): A small domestic airport; useful if you find a connection but with limited scheduled flights. Ground transport from Haifa to Safed (Tzfat) is by taxi or bus (≈50-70 minutes).
Ben Gurion Airport (TLV): Israel’s main international gateway. From TLV you can reach Safed by a combination of train (to Haifa or Karmiel) plus Egged bus or by direct intercity bus/taxi. Expect door-to-door travel times of about 2-3 hours depending on connections and traffic.
Train: There is no train to Safed itself. The nearest Israel Railways stations are Karmiel and Haifa (Hof HaCarmel, Haifa Merkaz HaShmona etc.)-from those stations use buses or taxis to reach Safed (Karmiel-Safed ≈30-45 minutes by road).
Bus: Egged operates frequent bus services to Safed from Haifa, Tiberias and Nazareth. Buses are the primary public transport option to Safed; journey times are roughly Haifa-Safed ≈1-1.5 hours, Tiberias-Safed ≈35-50 minutes and Nazareth-Safed ≈45-70 minutes.
How to Get Around Safed #
Safed (Tzfat) is a small, hilltop city with narrow, steep lanes - it’s best explored on foot but be prepared for stairs and cobbled alleys. Taxis and local minibuses (sheruts) connect Safed with Tiberias, Nazareth and other regional towns. Parking is limited in the old city, so many visitors arrive by organized tour or taxi. Comfortable shoes are essential for walking the artists’ quarter and historic synagogues.

Nightlife in Safed #
Nightlife in Safed is limited and quiet; evenings centre on cosy cafés, small restaurants and occasional cultural events or concerts. There is no large bar or club scene - the town is more about art and spiritual atmosphere. If you want lively nightlife, larger Galilean towns such as Tiberias offer more options.
Shopping in Safed #
Safed is known for its artists’ quarter and religious bookshops: expect galleries selling paintings, Judaica, Kabbalah books and silver filigree. Small craft shops and souvenir stalls populate the old city. This is a good place to buy local art, religious items and handcrafted jewellery rather than mainstream fashion or big-brand shopping.
