Whitewater rafting is a niche but thrilling pursuit in the Middle East, concentrated in the mountains of Turkey where snowmelt feeds powerful rivers. The Çoruh in the northeast is legendary among rafters, one of the world’s steepest and most exciting whitewater rivers, while the Köprülü canyon near Antalya offers accessible day trips through a stunning gorge.
Turkey has the most developed rafting scene by far, with operators, guides, and graded runs for everyone from families to experts. Elsewhere, opportunities are more limited and adventurous, from the canyons of Iraqi Kurdistan to Iran’s mountain rivers, and are best arranged through specialist local outfitters.
The season peaks in spring and early summer when snowmelt swells the rivers, and canyoning often complements rafting in the same mountain gorges.
