Road Trips in the Middle East

The Middle East rewards the self-driver with some of the world’s great road trips, threading between ancient cities, deserts, mountains, and coastlines. Jordan’s compact size makes a loop from Amman down the King’s Highway to Petra and Wadi Rum one of the region’s classic drives, taking in canyons, castles, and the Dead Sea along the way.

Oman is arguably the region’s finest road-trip country, with excellent roads linking fjords, deserts, mountains, and the monsoon-green south. Turkey’s Turquoise Coast and Cappadocia offer scenic touring routes, and Iran’s grand loop connects Tehran, Isfahan, Shiraz, and desert cities packed with heritage.

Road quality is generally excellent in the Gulf, Jordan, and Turkey, more variable elsewhere. Distances can be long, so factor in fuel stops and the region’s intense heat and shifting travel conditions.

Classic Driving Routes#

King’s Highway, Jordan One of the world’s oldest continuously used roads, winding from Amman past Crusader castles, mosaic-rich Madaba, the vast Wadi Mujib gorge, and Kerak to arrive at Petra. A slower, spectacular alternative to the desert highway, packed with history.

Turquoise Coast, Turkey A stunning Mediterranean drive linking Antalya, Kaş, Fethiye, and the Lycian ruins along pine-clad cliffs and turquoise bays. Winding coastal roads reveal ancient theatres, beaches, and gulet harbours at every turn.

Muscat to Salalah, Oman An epic 1,000-kilometre journey down Oman’s coast and through the desert to the monsoon-green south, passing wadis, forts, and the sands of the Empty Quarter’s edge. The dramatic contrast from arid coast to lush Dhofar is unforgettable.

Cappadocia loop, Turkey A compact circuit through fairy-chimney valleys, rock-cut villages, underground cities, and panoramic viewpoints. Short drives between highlights make it ideal for unhurried exploration between balloon flights.

Iran classic route The grand cultural loop from Tehran through Kashan, Isfahan, Yazd, and Shiraz to Persepolis, linking Persia’s greatest cities, mosques, and desert towns. A long but richly rewarding drive across the heart of Iran.

Oman mountains, Jebel Akhdar & Nizwa A mountain circuit from Muscat to the fort town of Nizwa and up the switchbacks of Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams. Terraced villages, canyon rims, and cool highland air reward the climb into Oman’s interior.

UAE to Oman, Musandam A short cross-border drive from Dubai into the Musandam peninsula’s fjord country, with dramatic coastal and mountain scenery. A weekend escape combining Emirati modernity with rugged Omani wilderness.

Dead Sea to Wadi Rum, Jordan A dramatic descent to the lowest point on Earth followed by a drive south to the red desert of Wadi Rum. Linking the Dead Sea, Petra, and Rum makes for one of the region’s most concentrated adventure routes.

Desert Highway, Jordan The fast modern artery running south from Amman toward Aqaba, threading the edge of the eastern desert and offering quick access to Wadi Rum and the Red Sea. Less scenic than the King’s Highway, it is the efficient route for covering distance.

Black Sea coast, Turkey A lush, misty drive along Turkey’s northern shore past tea plantations, hazelnut groves, and green mountains rising sharply from the sea. Winding roads climb into the Kaçkar highlands, offering a cooler, greener contrast to the Mediterranean.

Salalah & Dhofar loop, Oman During the summer khareef monsoon, the far south turns emerald green, and a circuit around Salalah links waterfalls, frankincense trees, blowholes, and beaches. It is one of Arabia’s most surprising and atmospheric drives.

Coastal UAE, Dubai to Abu Dhabi and beyond, UAE A smooth run along the Gulf linking gleaming cities, desert dunes, and the Liwa oasis at the edge of the Empty Quarter. Modern highways make it easy to pair skyscrapers, sand seas, and cultural sites in a few days.
