How to Get to Bethlehem#

Bethlehem is reached by road from Jerusalem; the nearest major airport is Ben Gurion (TLV) with onward public buses or shared taxis via Jerusalem and the checkpoint routes. Cross‑border and checkpoint procedures affect travel times-plan a little extra time.

By Air

Ben Gurion Airport (TLV): The main international airport serving Jerusalem and the West Bank. From TLV, take the public bus 485 or a private shuttle to Jerusalem (approx 40-60 minutes, 16-25 ILS for the bus), then transfer to a shared taxi (sherut) or bus to Bethlehem. Expect total transfer time of 1-1.5 hours plus checkpoints.

Queen Alia International (AMM): If arriving via Amman (Jordan) you can cross into the West Bank by land at the Allenby/King Hussein Bridge (subject to permits). Crossings are complex and can add several hours-arrange transfers with an operator familiar with border procedures.

By Train & Bus

Train: Israel Railways serves stations in Israel but there is no direct passenger rail into Bethlehem; the closest rail access is to Jerusalem (Malha or Yitzhak Navon) followed by bus/sherut.

Bus / Sherut (shared taxi): Regular sheruts and buses run from Jerusalem’s central bus stations and from checkpoints to Bethlehem (e.g., from Jerusalem’s Damascus Gate area or from the Gilo/Gush Etzion direction). Typical sherut fares from Jerusalem to Bethlehem are around 8-15 ILS and the trip takes 20-45 minutes depending on checkpoint queues.

How to Get Around Bethlehem#

Bethlehem is most commonly reached by road from Jerusalem/Ben Gurion Airport; sheruts are the practical, frequent option while private taxis and organized tours reduce navigation stress around checkpoints.

  • Shared taxi (sherut) / shuttle (~8-15 ILS) - Sheruts run between Jerusalem and Bethlehem and are often faster than buses because they depart when full. They pick up from central Jerusalem points and drop near Manger Square; fares are typically around 8-15 ILS and journey time 20-45 minutes depending on checkpoint processing.
  • Public bus (Low (a few ILS)) - Buses serve routes between Jerusalem and Bethlehem from central bus stations; they are cheap but can be slower due to stops and security checks. Check up‑to‑date timetables and departure points in Jerusalem-service frequency is good during the day but reduced evenings/holidays.
  • Private taxi (~70-150 ILS from TLV to Bethlehem (approx)) - Private taxis are available from Jerusalem or Ben Gurion Airport and are the most direct option; negotiate a fixed fare or use an official metered service when available. They are useful for late arrivals or when carrying luggage but expect higher costs and possible delays at checkpoints.
  • Organized tours / transfers ((Operator dependent)) - Many visitors arrive to Bethlehem on organized day tours from Jerusalem or Tel Aviv; these include pickup, guided visits, and entry guidance. They remove the hassle of navigating checkpoints and provide historical context.
  • Local taxis & minibuses (Low) - Within Bethlehem, local taxis and minibuses run short routes to churches, markets and surrounding towns. Fares are low-agree price before starting or use posted rates where available.
  • Walking - Bethlehem’s Old City around Manger Square is compact and best explored on foot. Many sites are within short walking distance, but some hills and uneven paving require comfortable shoes.
