Northern Highlands & Lake Shore (Karonga, Nyika, Mzuzu)

Downpours taper through March yet the ground stays sodden and many smaller forest tracks on the Nyika Plateau remain churned and slippery. Morning mist can linger above 2,000 m around the plateau while lowland lakeshore spots see humid heat broken by heavy afternoon storms; the waterfalls around Chitipa and Viphya are still dramatic. Visitors should allow extra travel time, and boat services on the lake may be irregular when winds pick up.

Central Plateau & Lilongwe Area

The land remains sodden through March with regular afternoon thunderstorms that replenish streams and reservoirs around Dowa and the surrounding highlands. Early-morning mist hangs over Shire Highlands foothills, turning rural vistas atmospheric but keeping minor tracks messy for 4x4s and bikes. This is a good period for birding as migrants and local breeders are active; however expect fewer international visitors and some accommodation still finishing rainy-season repairs.

Lake Malawi Shore & Islands (Cape Maclear, Nkhata Bay, Likoma)

March’s showers remain regular though usually less intense than mid-summer peak storms, and visibility for snorkeling improves in windows between rains. Nkhata Bay’s guesthouses begin to see a slow reduction in bookings compared with peak season, making it easier to find quieter coves and arrange local fishing or diving trips. Travelers should keep itinerary flexibility - schedules for public launches and transfers can change with the weather.

Southern Highlands & Blantyre (Mulanje Massif, Thyolo, Zomba)

Streams remain full into March and cloud cover on the high peaks is frequent, making long-range views of Mulanje and Zomba less reliable for photographers. Low-lying plains around Blantyre can see standing water after storms while higher slopes begin to dry gradually toward month-end. If you’re chasing quiet trails and verdant forest walks, this is good timing, but plan for wet-weather contingencies.

Lower Shire Valley & Wildlife Corridor (Liwonde, Majete, Shire River)

March sees continued high humidity and frequent thunderstorms, though there are often dry windows for early-morning safaris before clouds build. River channels remain high and game viewing from boats stays productive; expect strong insect presence at dawn and dusk. Driving across the valley can be slow where surfaces have been churned by rain, so guided park transfers are the safest choice for remote reserves.
