Northern Highlands & Lake Shore (Karonga, Nyika, Mzuzu)

By April the long rains are drawing to a close; the countryside around Mzuzu and the lakeshore is a patchwork of green and brown as puddles empty and streams drop. Temperatures are beginning to moderate, especially at higher elevation where nights can be distinctly cool; this is a good window for photographers as skies clear between showers. Many lodges and camp sites on the Nyika Plateau reopen fully after repairs, but come prepared for muddy access tracks.

Central Plateau & Lilongwe Area

As April progresses the plateau dries noticeably, leaving a bright, less oppressive atmosphere in Lilongwe and surrounding tea estates. Residual puddles and swollen rivers can still affect rural road travel, but city sightseeing becomes more comfortable and mosquito activity, while still present, is reduced. It’s an agreeable shoulder-season window for visiting botanical gardens and the Kumbali Cultural Centre before the cool season sets in.

Lake Malawi Shore & Islands (Cape Maclear, Nkhata Bay, Likoma)

April brings the end of the main wet season and the lake level is high; shorelines and low-lying beaches around Cape Maclear are lush but can be muddy after heavy rains. Boat operators tidy fleets for the upcoming drier months and water clarity starts to recover, good news for snorkelers and freshwater divers. Expect some road disruptions from lingering puddles, so allow extra time for transfers from Lilongwe or Blantyre.

Southern Highlands & Blantyre (Mulanje Massif, Thyolo, Zomba)

April’s rains taper and the foothills dry quickly; by late April the highland trails become more passable and the afternoon thunderstorm frequency drops. Temperatures on the Mulanje plateau cool appreciably, offering comfortable hiking conditions and improved visibility for summit attempts. Road conditions improve for transfers from Blantyre but still carry residual mud in deeply rutted sections.

Lower Shire Valley & Wildlife Corridor (Liwonde, Majete, Shire River)

By April the rains start easing and the Shire Valley remains very green with rivers still running strongly - waterfalls and seasonal floodplains make for dramatic photographic scenes. Roads begin to firm up in the latter half of the month, improving access to reserves like Majete for safari-goers. Pack light rain gear but also layers for cooler mornings; the landscape is at its most botanically lush.
