Northern Highlands & Lake Shore (Karonga, Nyika, Mzuzu)

By December heavy, regular rains become the norm and humidity rises; the lakeshore is lush and the Nyika uplands frequently shrouded in cloud and mist. This is peak water season: rivers are full, track conditions deteriorate quickly after storms, and some remote lodges limit access. If you don’t mind wet weather, wildlife viewing near permanent water and the explosion of insect and bird life make this a rewarding - if soggy - time to visit.

Central Plateau & Lilongwe Area

December is reliably wet with high humidity and frequent thunderstorms - Christmas and New Year celebrations are lively but can be punctuated by rain. Flights and long-distance road travel may face delays during strong storms, and mosquitoes are abundant so malaria prophylaxis and nets remain important. Despite the rain, December is a vibrant travel time for cultural events and lush landscapes if you accept occasional disruptions.

Lake Malawi Shore & Islands (Cape Maclear, Nkhata Bay, Likoma)

December is reliably wet with frequent thunderstorms and high humidity; the landscape is lush and many seasonal waterfalls near the lake are flowing strongly. Boat trips run between showers but expect occasional cancellations during heavy storms - this is not the best window for uninterrupted island-hopping. Despite the rain, the lakeshore remains warm for short swims and lively with local holiday activity.

Southern Highlands & Blantyre (Mulanje Massif, Thyolo, Zomba)

December is typically wet and humid throughout the southern highlands, with frequent thunderstorms and mist that can keep Mulanje’s summits cloud-covered for days. The intense colours and full waterfalls are tempting for landscape lovers, but plan for travel interruptions and carry waterproof gear; mosquito protection is essential at lower elevations. If you accept weather variability, guided short walks and estate tours remain rewarding.

Lower Shire Valley & Wildlife Corridor (Liwonde, Majete, Shire River)

December is wet, humid and prone to strong thunderstorms which can transform camp approaches and river access overnight; flooding is possible in low-lying areas. The Shire’s seasonal pools and floodplains teem with life, offering excellent mobile wildlife viewing if you can adapt to disrupted schedules. For comfort, choose well-prepared lodges with raised access and reliable vehicles for transfers.
