Northern Highlands & Lake Shore (Karonga, Nyika, Mzuzu)

February continues the wet, steamy pattern with heavy, sometimes prolonged downpours that can swell streams and flood low-lying roads around Mzuzu and Karonga. Cyclonic systems in the Indian Ocean occasionally send destructive rains into northern Malawi at this time, so expect sudden travel disruptions and check local advisories if heading into isolated communities or overland to Tanzania. For wildlife watchers the landscape is luxuriant and insect-active; strong repellents and quick-drying clothing are essential.

Central Plateau & Lilongwe Area

Cloudbursts continue into February, and the central plateau often receives intense, localized downpours that reshape potholes and make some secondary roads impassable. Lilongwe’s quieter tourist attractions become humid and wet - the Parliament and Old Town areas are still visitable, but plan indoor options. Festivals and community events may be postponed by weather; bring waterproof shoes and a strong umbrella for walking between shops and markets.

Lake Malawi Shore & Islands (Cape Maclear, Nkhata Bay, Likoma)

Wet and humid conditions persist through February, and the lake can become choppy during prolonged storms; small ferry crossings to places like Likoma Island may be suspended during strong winds. This month carries a heightened risk of heavy rainfall from regional cyclonic activity, so check marine warnings if planning island-hopping. The upside is sensational rivers and plunging waterfalls upstream and fewer crowds at popular snorkeling sites when skies clear.

Southern Highlands & Blantyre (Mulanje Massif, Thyolo, Zomba)

February continues the wet pattern with heavy rains and high humidity; the southern districts can be particularly affected when coastal cyclones push inland, producing flash floods around Blantyre and in the Phalombe areas. Mountain lodges sometimes close or limit access after extreme storms; always check local conditions before attempting to climb Mulanje. The wet weather is excellent for waterfalls and the tea estates’ emerald colors, but bring sturdy boots.

Lower Shire Valley & Wildlife Corridor (Liwonde, Majete, Shire River)

The wet season remains strong in February, and heavy rain events occasionally cause localized flooding in Liwonde and along the Shire River, disrupting overland access to parks. Boat-based wildlife viewing can be spectacular with full channels and energetic hippo and crocodile activity, but operators may curtail trips during high flow. Carry waterproofs and flexible plans; anti-malarial precautions are particularly important in this low-lying, humid environment.
