Northern Highlands & Lake Shore (Karonga, Nyika, Mzuzu)

Squalls and high humidity dominate much of January here; daytime temperatures on the lakeshore around Karonga sit in the high 20s-low 30s °C while the Nyika Plateau stays cooler and misty. Torrential afternoon thunderstorms are common, making dirt roads slippery and some remote trails in Nyika National Park muddy and slow. Birdlife and waterfalls are at their fullest, but plan for cancelled or delayed regional flights and bring a reliable rain jacket and waterproof bags for kit.

Central Plateau & Lilongwe Area

Heavy humidity and frequent thunderstorms define January on the central plateau around Lilongwe; daytime heat sits in the high 20s-low 30s °C and storms tend to arrive in the late afternoon. Urban drainage can be overwhelmed during stronger cells, so city transfers and short flights may be delayed; lodges with covered parking and mosquito screens are wise choices. Gardens, golf courses and nearby reserves are lush and active with birds, though hiking trails will be slippery.

Lake Malawi Shore & Islands (Cape Maclear, Nkhata Bay, Likoma)

January at the lakeshore is hot, steamy and often punctuated by dramatic late-afternoon thunderstorms; water temperatures are warm and attractive for swimming but visibility can drop after heavy rains. Cape Maclear and Nkhata Bay are lively with seasonal tourist activity; boat operators run frequently but be prepared for short-notice cancellations during squalls. Mosquitoes are numerous in the evenings - bring repellents and treat nets where staying in basic chalets.

Southern Highlands & Blantyre (Mulanje Massif, Thyolo, Zomba)

January is hot and very wet across the southern highlands; Mulanje Massif and Thyolo receive frequent cloudbursts that make mountain paths slippery and rivers rise quickly. Tea plantations are lush and waterfalls are at their fullest - great for photographers but poor for exposed ridge walking unless you have experienced guides and waterproof gear. Expect road delays on steep, rural routes and heavy mosquito activity in low-lying areas.

Lower Shire Valley & Wildlife Corridor (Liwonde, Majete, Shire River)

January is sultry and rainy down the Shire Valley; daytime heat is high and sudden storms can swell the Shire River, making boat safaris dramatic but sometimes restricted. Wildlife congregates near larger water bodies and riverine trails are lush; be prepared for muddy lodge approaches and increased mosquito activity. If you plan nocturnal drives, remember that insects are at their peak and some dirt tracks can become challenging after heavy showers.
