Northern Highlands & Lake Shore (Karonga, Nyika, Mzuzu)

A cool, clear spell sets in through June; mornings on the Nyika Plateau can be chilly and jacket-worthy while daytime highs on the lake edge settle into the low to mid-20s °C. This is prime time for walking and birding - wildlife in Viphya and Nyika becomes easier to spot as vegetation thins slightly and waterholes concentrate animals. Pack layers for night-time and higher elevations, and expect quiet lodges away from the main lakeshore towns.

Central Plateau & Lilongwe Area

June’s cool, dry air is ideal for walking the city and day trips to Dzalanyama Forest Reserve; nights can be surprisingly chilly in the highlands so a warm fleece will be appreciated. With the rains well behind, visibility for scenic drives is excellent and the national capital hums with fewer mosquitoes. Accommodations are quiet compared with the high season, and road conditions are generally good for self-drive travel.

Lake Malawi Shore & Islands (Cape Maclear, Nkhata Bay, Likoma)

June’s crisp mornings and warm, sunny days create near-perfect conditions for water activities: glassy mornings on Lake Malawi are great for early snorkel or photography sessions around Nkhata Bay. The horizon is generally calm, ferries run on schedule, and lodges have steady availability without the peak-season prices. Pack a light fleece for evenings, particularly if staying on small islands where winds can make nights feel chilly.

Southern Highlands & Blantyre (Mulanje Massif, Thyolo, Zomba)

June is cool and dry with mornings that feel brisk on the Mulanje Massif; summit attempts are popular because conditions are stable and the trails are firm. Daytime temperatures are mellow, ideal for exploring waterfalls and the tea plantations without the downpour risk. Nights, especially on higher campsites, can be cold - bring a warm sleeping bag and thermal layers.

Lower Shire Valley & Wildlife Corridor (Liwonde, Majete, Shire River)

June’s dry, clear conditions are ideal for game viewing as animals concentrate on permanent rivers and waterholes - Liwonde and Majete offer some of their best sightings in this month. Day temperatures are comfortable and nights can be cool in bush camps; bring warm layers for early-morning game drives. With reduced vegetation cover, photographic opportunities improve and safari logistics are straightforward.
