Lempad's House House

Amid Bali’s rainforests, beaches and reefs, its artistic traditions are easy to overlook. In Ubud, Lempad’s House offers a compelling reason to slow down: it is a house-museum honouring I Gusti Nyoman Lempad, one of Bali’s most celebrated artists and sculptors.

The museum is quite literally his home, where the artist’s family still lives today. It can feel a little unusual at first, but Lempad’s work quickly holds the attention, and the classic Balinese architecture adds to the charm. Lempad is famous above all for ink drawings depicting Balinese Hindu scenes of mythical origin, and admirers travel from across Southeast Asia and beyond to see them.

Because the building remains a family dwelling rather than a formal landmark, visitors should be respectful and come during sensible hours. There are no guided tours, though on occasion Lempad’s grandson, I Gusti Gede Udayana, will greet guests for a chat. Entry is free, and many artworks are for sale, most created by other talented artists from the region.
