How to Get to Kathu#
Kathu is on Phuket island and is normally reached by road from Phuket International Airport (HKT). There’s no train; taxis, Grab and the island’s shuttle/bus services are the standard ways to arrive and move around.
Phuket International Airport (HKT): The main airport for Phuket island. Kathu is on Phuket island and typically a 25-40 minute drive from HKT depending on traffic. Taxis and Phuket Grab rides from the airport to Kathu cost roughly THB 500-900; the Phuket Smart Bus provides a cheaper connection along parts of the island.
Other options: There are no other major airports on Phuket; most international arrivals use HKT and then transfer by road to Kathu and nearby destinations.
Train: Phuket has no rail service; travel is by road on the island.
Bus / Shuttle: Phuket Smart Bus services and private airport shuttles operate routes linking the airport with Phuket Town, Patong and other main points; from those stops take a short taxi or local tuk‑tuk to Kathu. Local songthaews and tuk‑tuks provide frequent short trips around Kathu and neighbouring areas.
How to Get Around Kathu#
Kathu is best navigated by taxi/Grab or by renting a vehicle. The island’s shuttle buses and local songthaews provide budget options for fixed routes; no rail services exist.
- Taxi / Grab (THB 500-900) - Taxis and Grab rides are the most straightforward way to get from Phuket Airport to Kathu and to move around the island. Fares depend on time of day and demand; agree an estimate for metered taxis or use the Grab app for upfront pricing.
- Phuket Smart Bus / shuttle (THB 100-200) - The Phuket Smart Bus and private shuttles run fixed routes linking the airport, Phuket Town, Patong and other main zones. They’re cheaper than taxis but have set stops and timetables; use them if your schedule matches the route.
- Songthaew / tuk‑tuk (THB 30-200) - Songthaews and tuk‑tuks serve short trips in and around Kathu and Patong. They’re convenient for quick hops but fares should be agreed in advance. They’re not ideal for long journeys or large luggage.
- Rental car / motorbike (THB 600+/day for car; THB 200+/day for motorbike) - Renting a car or motorbike is popular in Phuket for flexibility, especially if you plan to explore beaches and viewpoints. Drive carefully - traffic can be busy and routes hilly; ensure proper insurance and helmet use for bikes.

- Walking - Kathu’s core is compact and walkable for short trips between shops, restaurants and local attractions. Walking is fine for nearby destinations but not for covering wider Phuket distances.
