Bang Thao Beach
Beach Resort beach on Phuket's northwest coast

Bang Tao Beach is a long sandy beach on the west coast of Phuket in Thailand, known for its broad shoreline and resort development. It is one of Phuket’s longest beaches and is lined by resorts, villas and beach clubs in places.
The beach offers stretches of shallow, sandy shoreline suitable for swimming and casual watersports; different sections vary from busy resort-front areas to quieter, less developed northern reaches. Many visitors come for sunbathing, stand-up paddleboarding and shoreline walks along the roughly 6-kilometre stretch.
Tourism-driven development began in the late 20th century and expanded with large resort projects and associated amenities such as golf courses and marinas. The beach now combines resort infrastructure with remaining patches of native vegetation and local fishing activity.
Bang Tao lies on Phuket’s west coast in the Thalang/Cherng Talay area, northwest of Phuket Town and along the island’s western seaboard facing the Andaman Sea.
- Length and character: Stretches approximately 6 kilometres along Phuket's west coast and includes both developed resort areas and quieter, more natural sections to the north.
- Development: Home to the Laguna Phuket resort complex and a number of beach clubs and golf facilities, with watersports and swimming available where conditions are calm.
How to Get to Bang Thao Beach #
Bang Thao is on Phuket’s northwest coast. From Phuket International Airport it is approximately a 25-35 minute drive (about 20-25 km) via route 402 and local roads toward Thalang/Choeng Thale. From central Patong or Phuket Town, follow Highway 4030/4025 north-west toward Cherng Talay; taxi or rented motorbike are the usual options. There are several parking areas off the main coastal road for beach access; local songthaews and hotel shuttles also serve the Laguna/Bang Thao area.
Tips for Visiting Bang Thao Beach #
- Walk north along the sand toward Laguna Phuket in the early morning to find quieter stretches and unexpected rock pools.
- If visiting high season (Dec-Mar), use the road entrance at Choeng Thale rather than smaller side roads-the main parking areas fill quickly.
- The southern end near the Laguna complex is more developed; head toward the central and northern stretches for a less commercial feel.
