Ao Phang Nga National Park
Park Marine park with dramatic limestone karsts and islands
Ao Phang Nga National Park features limestone karsts rising from Phang Nga Bay. Tourists take boat tours, sea-kayak among caves and visit Khao Phing Kan (James Bond Island) adjoined by small fishing villages.
Ao Phang Nga National Park is a marine and coastal protected area in southern Thailand encompassing dramatic karst islands, limestone towers and mangrove systems in Phang Nga Bay.
The park’s signature features are sheer limestone karsts and islets rising from the sea, narrow mangrove channels and sea caves ideal for guided canoeing and boat excursions. Iconic formations include the needle-like sea stack known as Koh Tapu and the nearby Khao Phing Kan islets, plus traditional stilt fishing villages.
Designated to protect the marine karst landscape and mangrove ecosystems, the park conserves both natural karst geomorphology and long-established coastal fishing communities. Its karst is a product of long-term marine and subaerial erosion.
Located in Phang Nga Bay off the west coast of southern Thailand, the park sits between the mainland and the islands off Phuket and is commonly reached by boat from coastal towns in Phang Nga and Phuket.
- Access and activities: Boat tours and sea-canoe trips through mangrove channels are the primary visitor activities; many tours operate from Phuket and Phang Nga towns.
- Popular landmark: Koh Tapu (the tall limestone pinnacle) became widely known after featuring in a 1974 film and is now a heavily visited viewpoint within the park.
What to See #
- Koh Tapu / Khao Phing Kan: Koh Tapu and Khao Phing Kan, the rocky limestone islets including the needle rock known internationally as "James Bond Island."
- Mangroves and sea caves: Mangrove-fringed mainland areas and sea-cave systems where guided canoeing and kayaking through narrow channels are common activities.
- Koh Panyee village: The stilted fishing village of Ko Panyee, a raised coastal settlement inhabited by fishing communities within the park area.
