Bissau & Coastal Lowlands

By May the coastline receives the first sustained rains; the switch to the wet season brings frequent afternoon thunderstorms and a sharp jump in humidity. Daytime highs are still warm (around 30-32°C) but the rain cools things briefly and fills the estuary channels, making boat trips more reliable in depth but sometimes slower. Travelers should expect muddy secondary roads and closing of some remote guesthouses for the wet season; light waterproofs, insect repellent, and flexible plans help.

Bijagós (Bissagos) Archipelago

May sees the onset of the wet season, and the archipelago becomes greener though sea conditions are more changeable with rougher swells at times. Temperatures climb into the low 30s and frequent rains can make sandy tracks turn quickly to muck. Many small guesthouses reduce services in the rains; if you do visit expect fewer tourists, spectacular bird activity, and possible delays on boat services between main islands.

Southern Mangroves & Rainforest (Tombali, Cacine)

May marks the start of sustained rains: the Tombali coastline is lush and many paths turn to mud after afternoon squalls. Temperatures are warm but cloud cover keeps extremes down; mosquitoes proliferate and malaria risk increases, so nets and prophylaxis are essential. Sea access to some small settlements may be limited and many lodges reduce services - a visit is rewarding for river wildlife but logistically more demanding.

Eastern Interior Savanna & Highlands (Gabú, Bafatá)

May marks the start of the wet season inland: the savanna turns greener rapidly and intermittent heavy rains can wash out tadpole-filled pools in village tracks. Rivers like the Corubal begin to rise, and bridges or low fords may be affected; pack waterproofs and be ready for slower journeys. The advantage is fewer insects than in coastal mangroves early on and lush scenery for trekking and birding if you accept occasional downpours.
