Bissau & Coastal Lowlands

July brings the wet season in full force, with heavy, sometimes torrential rains and swollen waterways that flood low-lying coastal villages. Visibility on water routes can fall in squalls, and frequent lightning can delay sea travel to islands or Bolama. For photography and cultural visits there are still rewards - lush greens and dramatic skies - but expect travel disruptions and pack waterproof bags for gear.

Bijagós (Bissagos) Archipelago

July typically brings heavy rain and overcast skies across the Bijagós, with inland lagoons swelling and mangrove channels fast-moving. The long rains are not continuous storms, but enough to disrupt schedules and make beach camping uncomfortable. Orango’s famous saltwater hippos are easier to spot in the flooded season as they move into new channels, but expect muddy, slippery trails and fewer tourism services in smaller islands.

Southern Mangroves & Rainforest (Tombali, Cacine)

July is typically in the heart of the wet season, producing saturated soils, swollen mangroves, and the most challenging travel conditions of the year: dirt tracks become rutted and sometimes impassable. The rain concentrates wildlife activity into remaining dry patches, attracting birds and mammals to predictable sites if you have a knowledgeable local guide. Pack for rain and mud, and accept that schedules will change - the reward is an intensely green, largely empty coastal landscape.

Eastern Interior Savanna & Highlands (Gabú, Bafatá)

July is one of the wettest months inland, with frequent heavy showers that can make river crossings hazardous and small tracks impassable. Temperatures are lower than the dry season but the constant humidity can feel oppressive, and mosquitoes are common in standing water. For adventurous travelers, wet-season photography and cultural immersion are rewarding, but bring protective clothing, waterproof storage for gear, and be prepared for cancelled connections.
