Bissau & Coastal Lowlands
By February the harmattan still trims humidity overnight and keeps dust in the air, making sunsets muted over the Geba estuary. Temperatures stay in the high 20s Celsius; humidity begins edging up toward March. City markets and ferry services run reliably, so it’s a practical month for travel logistics; pack layers for cool mornings and include a good dust mask if you are sensitive to fine particles.
Bijagós (Bissagos) Archipelago
February often delivers calm seas and clear skies that make inter-island boat transfers more predictable - a real bonus if you’re aiming for Bolama or Rubane. Daytime heat remains moderate, and the islands’ mangrove creeks are easy to explore by dugout canoe. Fewer mosquitoes than in the rainy season make camping or beach bungalows more comfortable; still carry repellant for dusk and dawn.
Southern Mangroves & Rainforest (Tombali, Cacine)
February tends to be warm and dusty inland before the rains start; the trees and mangroves hold onto moisture and the ground begins to feel stickier by midday. Wildlife is active in the remaining freshwater pools and birdwatching can be rewarding along tidal creeks. Road surfaces are generally firm, so it’s a convenient month for overland travel to Tombali’s coastal settlements - wear breathable clothing and bring sun protection.
Eastern Interior Savanna & Highlands (Gabú, Bafatá)
February’s dry air keeps bushfires and smoke a possibility in agricultural zones, and the landscape is noticeably brown and dry ahead of the rains. Daytime heat is comfortable but climbs toward March; early morning excursions are the most pleasant for walking and wildlife viewing. Roads are firm and long-distance overland travel to the coast is easier before the wet season makes tracks treacherous.
