Dahlak Archipelago (Red Sea islands)

In September the winds slowly ease and the sea becomes more settled, restoring some of the long calm windows for early-morning dives and island excursions. Visibility generally improves after the peak-wind months, and liveaboards return to fuller itineraries including longer reef swims. Temperatures are high but the combination of warm water and diminishing chop makes this an attractive shoulder-season for underwater photographers.

Red Sea Coast (Massawa, Assab and coastal plains)

September brings some easing of the intense summer heat and calmer seas become more common, restoring reliability to ferries and charter boats. Massawa wakes up a little after the windiest months, and diving operations extend their schedules back to full days. Pack light layers for the cooler early mornings and expect afternoons to remain warm but more tolerable.

Central Highlands (Asmara, Keren, Mendefera, high plateau)

September the rains taper late in the month and roads begin drying; mornings can be clear and fragrant while afternoons still hold scattered showers. This shift restores normality to long-distance travel and opens up highland treks again as tracks firm; late-season flowers and swollen streams offer great scenery. Bring both lightweight rain protection and warmer layers for cooler nights.

Gash-Barka and Western Lowlands (Barentu, Teseney, agricultural plains)

September sees a gradual decrease in rainfall and beginning of road drying, though isolated heavy showers remain possible. The landscape is still green and streams run, making cross-country driving easier than in midsummer, but allow extra time for muddy stretches. This is a transitional month where travel reliability improves day by day.

Southern/Southeastern Lowlands and Danakil-facing desert

September brings a slow easing of peak heat and more tolerable late afternoons, but the lowlands remain hot and dusty; early mornings become the best time for any outdoor activity. Road conditions can improve as some dust calms, yet caution is still needed for long overland journeys. If you are aiming for dramatic desert landscapes, late September offers improved comfort for photography at dawn and dusk.
