Dahlak Archipelago (Red Sea islands)
November’s milder conditions make island-hopping very pleasant, with comfortable sea breezes and lower humidity than late summer; visibility remains good and the chance of long flat-calm days increases. This is one of the most popular windows for diving charters from Massawa, so expect more boats at the main sites and plan dive slots early in the day. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard and light evening layers.
Red Sea Coast (Massawa, Assab and coastal plains)
November’s light northerlies and lower humidity create pleasant days for visiting the Red Sea sites; Assab and areas south are warm but no longer relentlessly hot, while Massawa sees lively market activity. Diving operators run full schedules with good visibility and calmer crossings. Bring sun protection and a light layer for breezy mornings on exposed reefs.
Central Highlands (Asmara, Keren, Mendefera, high plateau)
November is comfortably dry and warm by day with cool nights; hillside villages are lively after harvest and roads are reliably passable across the plateau. This month is one of the highlands’ best for trekking and cultural touring: fewer flies than lowlands, stable weather and comfortable daylight temperatures. A light jacket for night-time and sun protection for daytime are sensible.
Gash-Barka and Western Lowlands (Barentu, Teseney, agricultural plains)
November is comfortably warm and dry with stable roads and pleasant mornings for walking around villages and markets; late afternoons are ideal for photography as the landscape dries to golden tones. This is a good time for arranging multi-day cross-country trips as services and transport are reliable again. Bring water and sun protection for long daytime drives.
Southern/Southeastern Lowlands and Danakil-facing desert
November is one of the best months to visit the southern lowlands and Danakil-facing areas: daytime heat is milder, winds calm and the clear desert light is excellent for panoramic photography. Local guides run more expeditions now that conditions are safer and travel is more reliable, making this a favored season for seasoned travelers. Pack a sunhat, layered clothing for cool nights and sufficient water supplies.
