Dahlak Archipelago (Red Sea islands)

By February the islands feel drier and the sea stays calm most days, which is ideal for island-hopping and freediving around coral gardens. Tourism is still low, so rates for day boats from Massawa are reasonable and beaches at small islets are quiet. Pack sunscreen, a hat and reef-safe swimwear; mornings and late afternoons are perfect for photography when the light is soft.

Red Sea Coast (Massawa, Assab and coastal plains)

A strong blue sky in February keeps the coast inviting for seaside strolling and day trips from Massawa; Assab further south is warmer but also extremely dry. Visibility for coastal diving and fishing is generally good, and the lower tourist numbers mean quieter beaches and cheaper boat charters. Pack a hat and a light windbreaker for evenings when the sea breeze freshens.

Central Highlands (Asmara, Keren, Mendefera, high plateau)

February continues cool with bright, sunny days and chilly nights; Asmara’s coffee houses are lively and outdoor terraces are comfortable. The highland farmland around Keren awakens with greening fields, and trekking routes toward Adi Keih remain passable. Bring layers for the morning cold and sun protection for midday, since the strong high-altitude sun can surprise.

Gash-Barka and Western Lowlands (Barentu, Teseney, agricultural plains)

February stays dry and hot during the day, and this is a common window for agricultural activity and harvesting in the plains; Teseney is lively and roads are generally in good condition. Windier afternoons begin to stir dust on open tracks, so sunglasses and a scarf are useful. Night temperatures remain comfortable for sleeping with only a light sheet.

Southern/Southeastern Lowlands and Danakil-facing desert

February brings warm days and still-cool nights across the southern lowlands; the desert remains dry and travel windows are typically early morning and late afternoon. Landforms like salt pans and volcanic plateaus are easier to traverse than in the heat of spring, and remote excursions are feasible with a reliable vehicle and guide. Sunscreen, plenty of fluids and good navigation are essential.
