Dahlak Archipelago (Red Sea islands)

By December the archipelago cools a touch and mornings are crisp compared with the summer - still hot by highland standards - and winds tend to be lighter, making transfers simple. The Red Sea is ideal now for long surface swims and photography at low tide reefs; guesthouses in Massawa fill with diving groups, so reserve boats and accommodation ahead. Pack sun protection and a light long-sleeve for evenings.

Red Sea Coast (Massawa, Assab and coastal plains)

December cools further along the coast, with mornings feeling fresher and evenings noticeably more comfortable than the summer months. This is one of the best months for combining Massawa’s architecture and short island trips as boats are reliable and crowds are moderate. Nights can be pleasantly cool for a jacket, especially if you are staying in buildings without air conditioning.

Central Highlands (Asmara, Keren, Mendefera, high plateau)

December returns to crisp, cool mornings and bright sun - days remain pleasant for exploring Asmara’s open-air markets and hilltop viewpoints. Nights feel cold compared with the coast, so a warm sweater is useful if you’re staying in non-heated accommodation. This is a popular season for local travel and weekends can be busier at scenic spots.

Gash-Barka and Western Lowlands (Barentu, Teseney, agricultural plains)

December cools further overnight and provides some of the most agreeable daytime conditions of the year; the lowland mornings can be sharp but daytime warmth is comfortable for exploring local culture. This month is popular for local travel and outdoor markets are lively. A light jacket for nights and a hat for daytime are sensible packing choices.

Southern/Southeastern Lowlands and Danakil-facing desert

December offers cool desert mornings and warm, comfortable days that are ideal for long hikes, salt-flat visits and photography of the lowland geology. This is a peak season for guided trips into the more dramatic lowland features because conditions are safe and services run more dependably. A warm layer for nights and sun protection for days will cover most needs.
