Dahlak Archipelago (Red Sea islands)

Clear, hot days dominate Dahlak in January; northerly sea breezes keep the sun bearable and visibility for diving is excellent around Dahlak Kebir and islands to the north. Water temperatures are pleasantly warm, making snorkeling off the coral atolls comfortable without a wetsuit, and boat charters run reliably from Massawa. Expect very few inland-style rains but bring sun protection, a light windbreaker for evenings and insect repellent for sheltered bays.

Red Sea Coast (Massawa, Assab and coastal plains)

Dry, hot days in January make Massawa pleasantly warm compared with the highlands; mornings are clear and sea breezes moderate the heat by afternoon. The coastline is mostly rainless so archaeological walks to places like the old stone houses in Massawa are easy, and ferries run fairly reliably. Bring lightweight clothing, sun protection and expect higher humidity than inland towns.

Central Highlands (Asmara, Keren, Mendefera, high plateau)

January mornings in Asmara are crisp and cool after clear nights; daytime sunshine is comfortable, often reaching the high teens to low twenties Celsius, and the city’s Italian-era architecture is ideal for walking. Rural highland tracks are dry and dusty, which makes hiking and visiting markets in Keren easy - pack a light jacket for evenings and a sun hat for daytime. This is one of the most pleasant months for sightseeing.

Gash-Barka and Western Lowlands (Barentu, Teseney, agricultural plains)

January is one of the cooler and drier months in Gash-Barka, with hot daytime temperatures but noticeably cooler nights than the coast; mornings are great for visiting local markets in Barentu. Dry farming landscapes are crisp and dusty, and the clear skies make sunrise and sunset drives rewarding. Bring lightweight but covering clothing to protect from sun and dust and expect sparse services outside main towns.

Southern/Southeastern Lowlands and Danakil-facing desert

January’s desert mornings are surprisingly cool before the sun quickly warms the land; by midday the low-lying depressions approach hot temperatures and the wide horizons are dry and clear. This is one of the few comfortable months for visiting lowland salt flats and desert tracks; distant mirages can shimmer over salt pans and pack plenty of water and a sunhat. Nighttime temperatures fall significantly in exposed desert camps, so a warm layer helps.
