How to Get to Druskininkai#
Druskininkai is reached most easily by bus from Vilnius or Kaunas; there is no major commercial airport in the town itself. Use Vilnius Airport if flying in, then transfer to an intercity bus.
Vilnius Airport (VNO): The nearest major airport to Druskininkai. From VNO take bus 88 or an airport shuttle to Vilnius central bus station (about €1.50, ~25-35 minutes), then an intercity bus to Druskininkai (see card 2). A taxi from VNO to Vilnius centre costs about €12-20 (20-30 minutes).
Kaunas Airport (KUN): Useful for some low-cost flights; shuttles/minibuses connect KUN with Kaunas city centre in ~20-30 minutes for roughly €3-5. From Kaunas you can catch an intercity bus to Druskininkai - total travel time typically 1.5-2 hours including transfers.
Train: Lietuvos geležinkeliai operates trains on several routes around southern Lithuania to Kaunas and Vilnius; until recently rail direct links to Druskininkai were limited, so trains are most useful to reach Vilnius or Kaunas as hubs.
Bus: Intercity buses run from Vilnius Bus Station and Kaunas to Druskininkai (operators include Kautra and other regional carriers). Typical fares from Vilnius are around €6-8 one-way and the journey takes about 1.5-2 hours; from Kaunas fares are slightly lower and the trip about 1-1.5 hours.
How to Get Around Druskininkai#
Druskininkai is best accessed by intercity bus from Vilnius or Kaunas; trains are useful only to reach those hubs. Within town, walking, local buses and bike rentals are the simplest ways to get around.
- Intercity bus (€5-9) - The main option to reach Druskininkai from Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda. Buses are frequent, comfortable and usually the fastest public option. Buy tickets online (operators like Kautra) or at stations; luggage space is available.
- Train (to hubs) (€2-12) - Take Lithuanian Railways to Vilnius or Kaunas if coming from farther away; then switch to a bus for the final leg to Druskininkai. Trains are reliable for long-distance travel but direct rail to Druskininkai is limited.
- Taxi / Bolt (€10-35) - Taxis and Bolt are useful for short local transfers in Druskininkai or for airport transfers if you prefer convenience. Expect fares higher than buses but quicker, especially for early/late flights.
- Local bus / minibus (€0.80-1.50) - Within Druskininkai local buses and minibuses link spa areas, hotels and the town centre; frequencies are reasonable in high season. For short hops they are cheap and adequate.
- Bicycle / e-scooter (€3-10/h) - Seasonal bike and e-scooter rentals are popular for exploring the Nemunas River area and nearby parks. Good option in summer; check rental terms and helmet availability.
