How to Get to Alytus
Alytus is best reached by intercity bus from Vilnius or Kaunas; Kaunas is the closest airport with shorter onward travel. Trains exist but buses are generally more frequent and convenient.
Vilnius Airport (VNO): The nearest major airport to Alytus. From VNO take bus or shuttle to Vilnius Bus Station (~€1.50, ~25-35 minutes), then an intercity bus to Alytus (see card 2). A taxi from the airport to Vilnius city centre is about €12-20 (20-30 minutes).
Kaunas Airport (KUN): Also an option; shuttles connect KUN with Kaunas centre in ~20-30 minutes for about €3-5. From Kaunas intercity buses serve Alytus with shorter journey times than from Vilnius.
Train: Alytus has a railway station served by Lietuvos geležinkeliai on regional routes; trains to Alytus are less frequent than buses but useful from some directions - check schedules in advance.
Bus: Regular buses connect Alytus with Vilnius, Kaunas and other cities. From Vilnius the trip takes around 1-1.5 hours with fares typically €4-6; from Kaunas it’s faster (~45-60 minutes) and cheaper (€2-5). Buses depart from main city bus stations and are the most reliable public option.
