Grande Comore (Ngazidja) - Moroni & coastal lowlands
September continues the dry trend with comfortable warmth and steady sea conditions; the trades remain gentle and marine visibility is often at its best of the year. This is an excellent month for land excursions just outside Moroni - the coastal tracks dry quickly and waterfalls (on hikes toward the interior) may still have small flows. Expect fewer mosquitoes and easier travel logistics than in the wet season.
Mount Karthala & central highlands (Grande Comore interior)
September continues the comfortable dry spell with stable conditions and good trail footing; summit attempts succeed more often this month than in the wet season. Birds and endemic plant life are easier to observe without the canopy of heavy rain, and local villages along the routes are pleasant places to stay. Carry warm clothes for dawn and dusk as temperatures remain modest at elevation.
Anjouan (Nzwani) - Mutsamudu, spice plantations & steep coasts
September remains warm and dry with steady seas; the island’s rugged coastline is easier to access and remote beaches feel private. This month often provides the best visibility for underwater life, so divers find conditions excellent. Expect minimal rainfall and fewer mosquitoes, making it an ideal time for hiking into the island’s interior to see traditional villages and spice gardens.
Mohéli (Mwali) & outer islets - marine park, turtles and quiet beaches
September holds warm, dry weather and top underwater visibility; this is the prime month for combining diving and land-based wildlife watching. Humpback whales are often encountered in the channel, and the marine park’s reefs display abundant fish life. Practicalities are easy - boat trips run reliably, but do reserve dive and conservation trips a few days ahead as small operators have limited boat capacity.
