Grande Comore (Ngazidja) - Moroni & coastal lowlands

February stays in the peak wet season with oppressive humidity and a continued risk of tropical storms; cloudbursts can send water through Moroni’s narrow streets and cause localized flooding. Boat services operate but are frequently postponed when swell increases, making air travel the more reliable option if schedules matter. For a traveler, museums and the covered markets are a good fallback on rainy days - bring waterproofs and expect damp clothes for drying overnight.

Mount Karthala & central highlands (Grande Comore interior)

February maintains a humid, wet pattern around the volcano; summit attempts are regularly fogged out and rain turns the red lateritic trails into clinging mud. The greater rainfall recharges streams and waterfalls on the approach, which can be spectacular but also make river crossings trickier. For trekkers this month is less predictable; strong, waterproof layers and a reliable local guide are essential.

Anjouan (Nzwani) - Mutsamudu, spice plantations & steep coasts

February stays squarely in the wet season with frequent thunderstorms and very warm conditions; visibility from cliffs is often limited by low clouds and drizzle. Mutsamudu’s old port retains a lively atmosphere indoors, but hiking in the interior is more challenging and rivers can swell unexpectedly. Travelers should carry insect repellent and consider arranging hikes through reputable local guides who know current trail conditions.

Mohéli (Mwali) & outer islets - marine park, turtles and quiet beaches

February brings continued humidity and high rainfall, but this is also a time when beaches and lagoons host nesting sea turtles and local guides know where to watch in the evening. Visibility for diving is often reduced after storms, though marine life is abundant. Inter-island ferries are at higher risk of cancellation, so if Mohéli is on your route, allow extra days in your plans and consider flying when possible.
