Grande Comore (Ngazidja) - Moroni & coastal lowlands
A true change is felt in June: mornings are fresh and nights can be distinctly cool near the coast (low 20s°C) thanks to persistent southeast trade winds. This is one of the island’s best months for walking the coastal paths and visiting markets without the oppressive humidity. Water clarity improves, so snorkeling and short reef trips off Moroni are rewarding; bring sun protection and a light fleece for breezy evenings.
Mount Karthala & central highlands (Grande Comore interior)
June is reliably cool and drier on the high slopes, with daytime temperatures commonly in the high teens to low 20s and nights that can feel chilly. The trade winds sweep across the ridges creating brisk conditions at altitude, so pack warm layers for pre-dawn starts. This is one of the best months for crater hikes - the paths are stable, views expansive, and camping on higher trails is far more comfortable than in the wet season.
Anjouan (Nzwani) - Mutsamudu, spice plantations & steep coasts
June is a pleasant month with consistent trade winds and comfortably warm daytime temperatures in the mid-to-high 20s; mornings are fresh and haze-free, making hilltop views dramatic. This is one of the best windows for hiking to lookouts and visiting rural villages without the mud. Snorkeling and small-boat trips out of Mutsamudu are usually reliable; bring sun protection and a light jacket for breezy afternoons.
Mohéli (Mwali) & outer islets - marine park, turtles and quiet beaches
June is comfortably warm with steady trade winds and calm seas, making it a prime month for organized snorkeling, diving and whale-watching trips that head into the wider channel. Humpback whale passage increases in the Mozambique Channel between July and September, and June is the start of the more dependable season for spotting large marine life. Nights are pleasantly cool near the shore; pack a sweater for evening meals.
