How to Get to Wat U Mong #

Wat Umong (Wat U Mong) is just outside Chiang Mai’s old city, about 3-4 km southwest of Tha Phae Gate. By road it’s quickest to take a taxi or red songthaew toward Suthep/Doi Suthep from the old city or Chiang Mai Bus Terminal; the drive is roughly 10-20 minutes depending on traffic. The temple sits off Huay Kaew / Suthep roads and there is parking at the site; if dropped at the roadside it’s a short 5-10 minute walk into the complex.

Tips for Visiting Wat U Mong #

  • Go early in the morning (shortly after dawn) to enjoy the tunnels, shady forest grounds and the large peaceful pond before tour groups arrive and the light is best for photos.
  • Enter via the main visitor parking/gate area off the road beside the temple - the tunnel complex and meditation halls are immediately accessible from that entrance and are the highlights many visitors miss.
  • Take the short circuit around the grounds to see the 14th‑century-style tunnel shrines, the hilltop stupa and the quieter meditation spots at the back of the site that most day visitors skip.
