Wat Ketkaram

Wat Ketkaram is a Buddhist temple complex located on the west bank of the Ping River in Chiang Mai city. The site functions as a local place of worship and is sited in the riverside Wat Ket neighbourhood.

The temple compound includes a viharn and an ordination hall set close to the riverfront and neighbouring community markets. Its riverside position makes it part of the cluster of temples and markets that line this stretch of Chiang Mai.

Founded before the modern era, the temple has served local devotional and monastic functions and forms part of Chiang Mai’s long-standing urban temple network. Specific foundation dates and founding patrons are not specified here.

The temple sits within central Chiang Mai, a short distance from the old city and the Warorot market area, on the west side of the Ping River.

Often called Wat Ket, this temple stands on the east bank of the Ping River opposite Warorot Market, Chiang Mai’s biggest fresh market. The surrounding area was originally settled by Chinese merchants and Western missionaries, and the riverbank in front of the temple is known as tha chang, or “elephant jetty”, from the days when elephants dragged teak logs here into rafts to be floated downstream.

The large compound holds the usual assembly hall, ordination hall, stupa and monks’ quarters, but its quirkiest feature is a small museum in the northwest corner. This houses many reminders of the era of intensive teak logging in the late 19th century, a collection assembled by one of the last of the teak wallahs, Jack Bain. Few tourists find their way here, though a pedestrian footbridge over the Ping River leads from Warorot Market directly to the temple’s back entrance, and the quiet residential streets east of the compound make for an interesting stroll.

Wat Ketkaram (Wat Ket) is in central Chiang Mai on the Ping River’s east bank, within the city rather than out in the provinces. From Chiang Mai Airport it is a short drive into town (typically a few kilometres, roughly 10-20 minutes by car depending on traffic). Within the city the temple is easily reached by taxi, tuk‑tuk or the red songthaew shared taxis; from the Old City or Chiang Mai Railway Station expect a short tuk‑tuk ride or a 15-25 minute walk.

• Visit early in the morning or late afternoon to enjoy the temple in quieter light along the Ping River and to avoid the peak hours of nearby markets and tour groups.
• Approach the temple on foot from the Warorot/riverfront side so you can combine a market visit and cross the iron bridge-this riverside route is the most direct and scenic.
• Allow a short detour to explore the temple's riverside setting; many visitors pass through to markets and miss the calm riverfront views and small community shrines adjacent to the compound.
