Overview Suan Buak Haad is a small public park located within the Old City of Chiang Mai, Thailand, occupying the southwest corner of the city moat.

What visitors find A modest grassy park with trees, paved paths and seating that provides a central, shaded place for locals and visitors to relax; it is convenient for short respite between nearby temples and markets. The park occasionally hosts small public events and informal weekend activities.

History Managed as a municipal public space, the park developed to provide recreational green space within the dense fabric of Chiang Mai’s historic Old City.

Location Situated inside Chiang Mai’s Old City ring road and moat, the park is in walking distance of many central attractions and guesthouse areas.

Located in the southwest corner of the Old City, this small park is the only green recreation space anywhere near the centre of Chiang Mai. It is attractively landscaped, with lakes, towering palms and flower beds, and there are plenty of benches in the shade. You will also find vendors renting out mats to roll out for a snooze on the grass, as well as food to feed the fish in the lake - though if you feed the fish, do not be surprised when flocks of pigeons come flapping around demanding a share.

During the week it is usually a quiet and relaxing place, with just a few locals reading newspapers on benches, but at weekends it can get very busy as families arrive for picnics. At the time of festivals such as the Chiang Mai Flower Festival in February, the park becomes a hive of activity. If you forgot to pack a picnic, there is a cafe selling all kinds of drinks and food just inside the entrance, and snack vendors often ply their trade out front.

How to Get to Suan Buak Haad

Suan Buak Haad is a small public park inside Chiang Mai’s Old City. It is within easy walking distance of Tha Phae Gate and the moat area. From Chiang Mai Airport it’s a short taxi ride (about 10-15 minutes, a few kilometres); within the city the red songthaew tuk‑taws will also drop you near the old city gates for a short walk to the park.
