How to Get to Voi#

Voi is a transport hub in southeastern Kenya with road and rail links to Mombasa and Nairobi. For most visitors the easiest approach is by bus or by rail from Mombasa/Nairobi; local taxis and matatus handle short trips.

By Air

Moi International Airport, Mombasa (MBA): Voi is most commonly reached by road from Mombasa (about 160-200 km) or by rail from Mombasa/Nairobi. From Mombasa airport the drive to Voi typically takes 2-3 hours by private car or bus.

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi (NBO): Nairobi is another air gateway; road travel from Nairobi to Voi is roughly 4-6 hours depending on route and traffic, or you can use the rail link to Mombasa that stops at Voi on some services.

By Train & Bus

Train: Voi is served by the historical metre-gauge rail network and is a stop on some intercity services along the Mombasa-Nairobi corridor. Schedules vary; check Kenya Railways for current stops and times.

Bus / Matatu: Regular matatus and intercounty buses run between Voi and both Mombasa and Nairobi. The Voi-Mombasa trip is typically 2-3 hours by road; Nairobi is longer. Buses are frequent and are the usual choice for travellers without private transport.

How to Get Around Voi#

Buses/matatus and the rail connection to Mombasa/Nairobi are the main ways to get to Voi. For local movement, taxis and boda-bodas are convenient; hire a vehicle if you plan to visit nearby parks.

  • Intercity bus / matatu (250-1,200 KES) - Frequent buses and matatus connect Voi with Mombasa and Nairobi. Buses to Mombasa take around 2-3 hours; Nairobi is generally 4-6 hours by road. Choose reputable companies for longer trips and expect basic facilities on matatus.
  • Kenya Railways (meter-gauge / intercity) - Some intercity and regional trains call at Voi. Train travel can be comfortable and scenic, particularly the coastal routes, but services and timetables change - check Kenya Railways before travelling. Trains are convenient if the schedule matches your plans.
  • Taxi / boda boda (50-800 KES) - Taxis are available in Voi for local trips; boda-bodas (motorcycle taxis) are the quickest way to move around town but take care with helmet use and safety. Taxis are useful for transfers to the bus station or railway station.
  • Private car / hire - Hiring a car is common for safaris and accessing nearby parks (Tsavo East). Road conditions on the main highways are generally good, but rural roads may be rough. A 4x4 is useful for off-road or park access.
  • Walking - Voi town centre and local markets are compact and walkable for short trips; wear comfortable shoes and be cautious on busy streets.
