How to Get to Watamu
Watamu on Kenya's coast is reached primarily by road from Malindi or Mombasa; Malindi Airport is the closest small airport while Mombasa's Moi International handles more international flights. Public minibuses, private shuttles and taxis handle the onward journey from either airport.
Malindi Airport (MYD): Malindi is the nearest small airport to Watamu (about 20-30 km); road transfer to Watamu takes roughly 25-40 minutes by car or taxi. Domestic flights to Malindi are limited; many travellers fly into Mombasa’s Moi International Airport (MBA) and continue by road.
Moi International Airport (Mombasa) (MBA): Mombasa’s airport is a larger international gateway. Road transfer to Watamu from Mombasa takes about 2-3 hours depending on traffic; shared shuttles and private transfers are common options.
Train: There is no direct passenger rail service to Watamu; the nearest broad passenger rail services end at Mombasa/Nairobi lines and are not practical for the final leg. Travel to Malindi/Watamu is normally by road.
Bus / Matatu: Buses and matatus run from Mombasa and Malindi to Watamu; from Malindi it’s a short taxi or boda-boda ride, while from Mombasa expect a longer minibus or coach trip (2-3 hours). Fares vary: matatus and buses are the cheaper option while private shuttles cost more.
How to Get Around Watamu #
Watamu village is easy to get around on foot - the main beach area and restaurants are clustered close together. For short hops locals use boda-bodas (motorbike taxis); agree a fare before you ride.
To reach Malindi or Mombasa use matatus and shuttle minibuses; trips to Malindi are short and inexpensive. If you plan on visiting marine parks or beaches, organise transfers through your hotel or a local operator.
