The island has no permanent population and is primarily of interest for its geology and as habitat for seabirds and marine mammals that breed in the South Sandwich archipelago. Access is limited to expedition vessels when sea and weather conditions permit.
The island is volcanic in origin and lies within a remote island group several hundred kilometres south-east of South Georgia and well away from continental landmasses. It is administered as part of the UK overseas territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.
Located in the southern Atlantic, Visokoi Island is surrounded by cold ocean and sea-ice influenced waters; the nearest permanently inhabited places are many hundreds of kilometres away.
