High / low are average daily temperatures (°C). “Feels” reflects how hot or cold it feels, allowing for humidity.
Northern Circuit (Arusha, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Kilimanjaro)
By late May, the long rains taper and the landscape begins the lush recovery before the cool dry season; roads gradually firm and charter flights resume normal schedules. Serengeti grass remains long but water starts concentrating in fewer pools, making predator sightings more rewarding again. Kilimanjaro’s lower forest trails are muddy; expect chilly nights up on the slopes and bring warm layers for high camp. Tourist numbers start to rise toward the end of the month as the prime season returns.
Zanzibar & the East Coast (Stone Town, Nungwi, Mafia, Dar es Salaam)
May sees the rains easing and the sea clearing; the island is green and coastal winds begin to pick up making late-May a shoulder season for kiteboarding spots. Mafia’s beaches recover quickly and diving visibility improves, making it a good month for lower-cost underwater trips. Daytimes are warm but more pleasant than March-April; evenings can still be humid. Travelers should still keep contingency days for boat transfers.
Lake Victoria & Northwest (Mwanza, Bukoba, Kagera)
May sees a gradual easing of the long rains; afternoons become shorter in length and the countryside stays vividly green - waterfalls and rivers are full. Ferry schedules regain reliability and roads firm up enough for day trips to regional attractions like the Bismarck rock formations near Bukoba. Mosquito activity remains high near stagnant pools, so insect precautions continue to be important. Arrival logistics improve late in the month as visibility returns.
Southern & Eastern Parks (Nyerere/Selous, Ruaha, Mikumi)
May sees the beginning of drying out, with afternoon showers giving way to longer dry spells as rivers gradually recede; roads slowly firm and overland transfers return to normal. Ruaha’s wildlife becomes easier to follow as game begins to concentrate near remaining waterholes, improving predator viewing. Birdlife remains prolific and shoulder-season lodge rates can be attractive. Bring layers for cool mornings and expect dustier roads as soils dry.
Southern Highlands (Mbeya, Iringa, Rungwe, Lake Nyasa/Malawi border)
May sees a marked reduction in rain toward the end of the month; trails firm up and waterfalls remain impressive but more accessible. Temperatures drop noticeably after sunset, so warm layers are useful on treks and overnight stays. Travelers find clear conditions for highland routes such as the Poroto Mountains and southern tea plateau walks. This is a good window before the peak dry months when roads are reliable again.
Central Plateau & Dodoma Region (Dodoma, Singida, Tabora)
May sees the long rains tapering off; the countryside stays green and road conditions begin to improve through the month as water drains. Travelling becomes easier and dust reduces, making late-May a comfortable shoulder season. Daytime temperatures stay warm but evenings cool slightly compared with the wettest months. Bring layers for nights and keep a rain jacket for errant showers early in the month.
