Northern Circuit (Arusha, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Kilimanjaro)

Dry heat builds across Arusha and the southern Serengeti, making January one of the easiest months for game drives and clear views of Kilimanjaro from Moshi and Marangu. Early morning and late-afternoon safaris are comfortable; mid-day can be hot so light layers and sun protection matter. Roads are generally passable and lodges are busy with international visitors. Expect some mosquitoes in riverine areas and pack a rain jacket only if you have specific mid-day activities planned.

Zanzibar & the East Coast (Stone Town, Nungwi, Mafia, Dar es Salaam)

January brings hot, humid days on Zanzibar and the mainland coast with warm, calm seas that are excellent for snorkeling around Mnemba and diving at Mafia Island. Stone Town is lively with festivals and nightlife; evenings can be muggy so lightweight cottons and a light insect repellent are sensible. Ferry crossings to the islands are usually smooth but book in advance during holiday spikes. Sun protection and a hat are essentials for beach time.

Lake Victoria & Northwest (Mwanza, Bukoba, Kagera)

January brings warm, muggy mornings around Mwanza with frequent late-afternoon showers that clear quickly; Lake Victoria’s massive surface moderates temperature swings. Ferry service between Mwanza and the Ukerewe/Bukoba area is generally reliable but can be choppy in squalls, so expect travel delays on wet afternoons. Birdwatchers will find plentiful migratory species along the lake margins. Bring mosquito protection and lightweight rain gear for sudden storms.

Southern & Eastern Parks (Nyerere/Selous, Ruaha, Mikumi)

January is hot and increasingly humid across Selous (now Nyerere) and Mikumi, with afternoon storms becoming more common; river levels start to rise, improving boat safaris but making some tracks wet. Birdlife is abundant and photographic boat trips on the Rufiji are rewarding when waters are high. Roads into Ruaha are usually still passable early in the month but begin to soften toward February. Pack light clothing, sun protection, and a waterproof layer for evening rain showers.

Southern Highlands (Mbeya, Iringa, Rungwe, Lake Nyasa/Malawi border)

January is warm in the valleys around Mbeya and Rungwe but far cooler than the lowlands; the highland tea gardens and waterfalls are lush after early rains and offer pleasant trekking conditions. Afternoon thunderstorms grow more frequent, particularly above 1,500-2,000 m, and trails can be slippery. This is a quieter time for visitors, good for seeing rural life and enjoying cooler evenings; bring a rain jacket and sturdy boots.

Central Plateau & Dodoma Region (Dodoma, Singida, Tabora)

January tends to be hot and relatively dry on the central plateau with clear skies and strong sun - daytime temperatures often climb in Dodoma and Singida. Dust rises on unpaved roads after long spells without rain; water sources can be reduced in rural areas. This is a good month for cultural visits and wine-tasting around Dodoma’s vineyards, but bring sun protection and a refillable water bottle. Expect fewer mosquitoes than in the lowland wetlands.
