High / low are average daily temperatures (°C). “Feels” reflects how hot or cold it feels, allowing for humidity.
Northern Circuit (Arusha, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Kilimanjaro)
February often brings the start of the calving season on the southern Serengeti plains around Ndutu, which floods the grasslands with wildlife and attracts predators - this is an exceptional month if you want close lion and cheetah action. Temperatures remain hot and humidity moderate; Arusha treks are dry and easier. Kilimanjaro approaches remain climbable with generally stable weather, though summit nights are still very cold. Book early for safari camps near Ngorongoro and Ndutu because spaces fill fast.
Zanzibar & the East Coast (Stone Town, Nungwi, Mafia, Dar es Salaam)
February is one of the sunniest and most comfortable months for the islands: warm water, low humidity spikes, and Sauti za Busara in Stone Town (normally held in February) bring cultural vibrancy. Visibility for underwater activities is excellent and beach towns like Nungwi are at their sunniest - ideal for swimming and diving. Mosquito activity is still present near mangroves and estuaries, so use repellent at dusk. Prices climb for popular beachfront accommodation.
Lake Victoria & Northwest (Mwanza, Bukoba, Kagera)
February often feels slightly drier but the region remains humid with pop-up storms in the afternoon; early mornings are excellent for excursions to Saanane Island and the lakeshore. Mwanza’s markets are bustling and road conditions improve for visiting nearby fishing villages. Lake water temperature is warm; snorkeling is limited by turbidity but local fishing trips operate year-round. Pack quick-dry clothing and expect dusty roads between showers.
Southern & Eastern Parks (Nyerere/Selous, Ruaha, Mikumi)
February often heralds the height of the wet season approaching: Ruaha and Selous host full rivers and dramatic waterfalls, and the landscape turns lush though some remote lodges operate on reduced schedules. Heavy rains are more likely in the afternoons, and tracks can become deeply rutted, slowing game drives and transfers. On the positive side, birding reaches a high point and there are fewer tourists. Bring waterproof boots and expect occasional charter flight delays.
Southern Highlands (Mbeya, Iringa, Rungwe, Lake Nyasa/Malawi border)
February remains warm in lower valleys yet the high-altitude towns like Iringa experience cooler nights; heavy afternoon and evening showers are common, refreshing the landscape. Ruteng-like forest hikes around Mount Rungwe become very green but boggy in places; local waterfalls are at their best. Pack waterproof hiking footwear, insect repellent for riverine areas, and be prepared for muddy trails on treks.
Central Plateau & Dodoma Region (Dodoma, Singida, Tabora)
February remains warm and increasingly dry before the rains start elsewhere; evenings are pleasant in town centres and easy for walking tours in Dodoma. The central plains heat up during the day, so schedule visits to archaeological sites or markets for mornings. Road dust is common and dust masks or scarves help on windy days. Keep hydrated and plan earlier starts to avoid midday heat.
