Northern Circuit (Arusha, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Kilimanjaro)

March signals the approach of the long rains in much of the northern circuit: daytime heat is punctuated by heavy afternoon or evening downpours, particularly around Moshi and areas east of Serengeti. These rains make some dirt roads into deep mud, slowing transfers to more remote camps and occasionally cancelling light aircraft to airstrips like Seronera. On the upside, the landscape becomes intensely green and birding around Lake Manyara picks up. Pack waterproofs and expect fewer crowds at higher-end lodges.

Zanzibar & the East Coast (Stone Town, Nungwi, Mafia, Dar es Salaam)

March starts to feel sticky as the long rains begin to affect the coast; downpours are increasingly common and can curtail boat trips to small islands like Chole in Mafia. Visibility for diving drops around heavy rain spells, and some rural roads on the main island can become slippery. This is a quieter travel window with lower rates, but plan flexibly as schedules for boats and tours may change. Take a lightweight waterproof and expect brief interruptions to island hopping.

Lake Victoria & Northwest (Mwanza, Bukoba, Kagera)

March is the beginning of the long rainy season with heavier, more persistent rains arriving across the lake basin; roads into rural Kagera become muddier and slower. The dramatic downpours replenish wetlands and make river crossings in remote areas challenging for 2WD vehicles. Birding around wetlands is excellent as migrant species arrive and the landscape grows lush. Travelers should leave room in itineraries for delayed ferries and consider 4x4 transfers.

Southern & Eastern Parks (Nyerere/Selous, Ruaha, Mikumi)

March brings frequent heavy rains across the south and east that peak the long-season precipitation; Selous boat safaris are spectacular for river scenery but some overland routes may close. Many camps move to raised boardwalks or adjust itineraries around flooded sections; wildlife disperses where water is widespread, making concentrated sightings less predictable. Travelers should plan on flexible schedules and robust luggage protection. Mosquito numbers increase and repellent is essential.

Southern Highlands (Mbeya, Iringa, Rungwe, Lake Nyasa/Malawi border)

March typically moves deeper into the long rainy season with frequent, heavy showers that can limit higher-altitude treks and make some secondary roads slippery. The mountain slopes are dramatically green and rivers are full, but rural crossings require 4x4 vehicles. Birdwatching is excellent and the tea estates show peak growth; expect fewer tourists and comfortable cool nights. Bring waterproof bags for camera gear and flexible travel plans.

Central Plateau & Dodoma Region (Dodoma, Singida, Tabora)

March is often the start of the long rains across much of the plateau: sudden afternoon and evening storms become more frequent and can quickly turn tracks muddy, especially around Tabora. Agricultural areas become very active and waterways rise, affecting rural travel times. Travelers should expect changed road conditions and pack waterproof footwear and protective covers for gear. Urban services are generally unaffected but rural transfers require flexibility.
