Northern Taiwan (Taipei, Keelung, Yilan)

November brings crisp, dry air as the northeast monsoon strengthens; temperatures dip into the low teens and you’ll feel a raw chill on coastal walks-pack a medium-weight jacket. The skies are usually clear, which is great for sunsets at Tamsui and for clear views from observatories such as Taipei 101. Expect quiet streets compared with summer; this is a good month for photography and for timing museum visits around local holidays.

Central Taiwan & West Coast (Taichung, Changhua, Sun Moon Lake)

November cools nicely and is generally dry; it’s a good time for longer hikes in the hills around Alishan and easier drives along the west coast without the summer traffic. Morning fogs in inland valleys offer atmospheric photography, but nights can be chilly in mountain towns-pack layers if you plan to stay overnight away from the lowlands. Fish markets and coastal seafood restaurants remain a reliable draw.

Southern Taiwan & Kenting (Kaohsiung, Tainan, Pingtung, Kenting Peninsula)

November cools slightly and humidity drops-this is an excellent month for outdoor exploration in Tainan’s historic districts and Kaohsiung’s harbor parks. Sea conditions remain favorable for island trips and boat tours, while fewer vacationers mean better deals on lodging. Morning fogs are uncommon, but pack a light layer for cooler nights near the coast.

Eastern Taiwan & East Coast (Hualien, Taitung, Taroko Gorge, East Rift)

November cools down with crisp mornings and lower humidity; Hualien’s coast is pleasant for whale-watching and the East Rift valley colors deepen. Mountain mornings can be foggy but daytime hikes are often dry-this is a popular shoulder season with fewer tourists and reliable weather for multi-day treks. Bring a warm layer for coastal evenings.

High Mountains & Central Range (Alishan, Yushan, Hehuanshan, Cross-Island Highways)

November cools quickly at elevation and the first winter frosts return to ridgelines; lower alpine meadows may still be accessible but nights become cold enough for ice formation. This is a quieter time for serious trekking before the winter snows, and day hikes can be spectacular with clear, low-humidity views. Pack warm, windproof layers and check hut availability because services reduce in low season.
